Twenty immigration officers from 11 Caricom member states and seven law enforcement officers from Trinidad and Tobago have benefited from training under a partnership agreement between CARICAD and IMPACS.
According to a press release, the Caricom Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICAD) and the Implementation Agency for Crime and security (IMPACS) are two regional agencies specifically developed to boost capacity of the Region’s border security officials.
Since the MoU was signed on July 31, 2008 initiating the partnership agreement between IMPACS and CARICAD, more than 200 immigration officers from across the Region have benefited from targeted training conducted at both the national and regional levels.
In her explanation of the ‘train the trainer’ five-day workshop for immigration officials held earlier this month, IMPACS Tonya Ayow said the training was designed to be “practical, relevant and participatory, emphasizing proven techniques and strategies that [participants] can use [to train their colleagues] immediately upon their return to their respective Member States.”
Ayow also said that the success of the programme had important practical implications for tourism, business and trade as well as the ongoing regional integration effort and that training will be directed at the Region’s customs officials in 2011.
