A teenager who had two grammes of cannabis in his possession and explained that he uses the illegal substance for medicinal purposes was yesterday ordered to pay a $3,000 fine and do six months’ community service.
When 18-year-old dredge operator Jermaine Williams appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, he admitted that on November 20 at the Georgetown, he had in his possession two grammes of cannabis.
The Albouystown man explained to the court that he is sickly and finds the cannabis useful.
Attorney-at-law Mohamed Zafar who represented the accused told the court that his client has taken full responsibility for his actions and is throwing himself at the mercy of the court.
The young man was later ordered to pay a $3,000 fine and to participate in a six-month community service programme.
