(TT Newsday) The two-match T20 series between the visiting Guyanese Lawyers Cricket Team and their TT counterparts ended in a draw over the weekend as both sides continue their preparation for the 3rd Lawyers Cricket World Cup next year.
TT won the opening fixture on Saturday by eight wickets, with Hugh Wooding Law school student Shashi Seecharan spanking an unbeaten 34 and skipper Javed Khan on 37 to lead their team past Guyana’s total of 91 for three.
TT were in early trouble after losing two quick wickets but Seecharan and Khan held the innings together and guided their team to victory with an unbroken partnership which yielded 82 runs.
Earlier, Guyana had won the toss and decided to bat, scoring 91 in their 20 overs with former Guyana Under-17 player Charles Ramson top-scoring with 26 and Ramroop Tesnarine adding 22.
In the second match on Sunday, the Guyanese got their revenge, however, beating TT by one wicket with five balls to spare in a tense finish.
Batting first, TT were put in a spell by off-spinner Dennis Paul who took four wickets for 15 runs. TT’s Ebrahim Ghuran top-scored with 24 but TT were still bowled out for just 71 in 19.4 overs.
The Guyanese were made to work hard to achieve the target as the TT lawyers tried to defend the paltry total with some economic bowling. But despite taking the match to the final over, TT could not complete the task as Guyana got the required runs. TT’s Guy Hannays and Ebrahim Ghuran finished with three wickets each.
Guyana’s Charles Ramson Jr and TT’s Shasi Seechanaran were named the top players of the series.
The lawyers met with former West Indies Test players Gordon Greenidge, Larry Gomes and Tony Gray before the start of the match on Sunday. In attendance was High Court Justice Prakash Moosai, Sheldon Gomes, Ganesh Mahabir, Pat Cheltenham, QC Barbados and other members of the legal fraternity.
The Lawyers Cricket World Cup is scheduled for August 7-21 next year in Barbados. Participating teams include Australia, India, England, Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Canada and the West Indies.
Two West Indian teams will be chosen from the Barbados, TT and Guyana teams.
