Digicel has confirmed its partnership with the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) with a $170,000 donation towards the GVF’s hosting of their international Goodwill Series, beginning today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The series will feature Suriname’s leading volleyball club Lyzecks as they go up against top local clubs. The telephone giant’s sizable donation was made by Public Relations and Events Manager, Shonette Moore to GVF President Lenox Shuffler at their head office at Barrack Street, Kingston yesterday.
Following yesterday’s presentation, Shuffler stated that while the club is here they will take the opportunity to discuss the future in terms of sustaining the friendship and to organise more interaction among the countries.
Captain of Lyzecks Giovanni Lin-Tsung also attended the simple presentation ceremony and said that they are happy to be visiting Guyana to participate in the series and is something that they’ve always wanted to do.
“We’ve played Guyana in Suriname before and it’s an honour to be in Guyana playing against the best clubs. I want to thank Digicel for presenting us with the opportunity and may the best team win,” said Lin-Tsung.
Adding to the captain’s comments, the team’s Coach Gary Ling said that if the tour serves as an opportunity to lift the standard of the sport in Guyana then they will be very happy.
Lyzecks are the current national champions and have won the title 15 times in the last 16 years.
They recently hosted the Caribbean championship where they ended runner-up.
The tournament serves off today at 16:00 hrs at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and will see top clubs such as Young Achievers, who was instrumental in organising the visit, Castrol Strikers and GuySuCo Training Centre of Port Mourant engage Lyzecks in a round-robin competition to determine which team is the best among the four clubs.
