Guyana’s Golden Jaguars will this afternoon tackle the Guadeloupe national football team at the Riviere Pilote Stadium in a key encounter of the Digicel Cup football finals in Martinique.
The two sides are in the `I ‘ group along with Antigua and Barbuda and defending champions Jamaica. Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, hosts Martinique and Grenada are in Group H.
The winning and runner up teams from both groups will contest the semi-finals.
The Golden Jaguars have never won this tournament and their chances of doing so appear to be weakened following the late withdrawal of two key players from the team.
Sean Cameron and JP Rodrigues who play for Miami Football Club belatedly withdrew from the side and it will take a determined effort from the Golden Jaguars to reach the final four.
The Golden Jaguars recently opposed the Guatemala national team in the United States of America and lost 0-3 and one wonders whether that defeat will affect the team’s confidence.
The Guadeloupe team has had an outstanding run in the lead up to the finals winning against St Kitts, Puerto Rico and Grenada while Guyana sneaked into the finals as the runner up team following a 4-0 whipping of Haiti by Trinidad.
Guyana and Haiti played to a 0-0 draw but Guyana defeated St Vincent and the Grenadines 2-0 but lost to Trinidad and Tobago 1-2.
Today’s game begins at 5pm and is expected to be aired live.
