The former Guyana captain and West Indies left-arm spinner is excited about the prospect, but he indicated that there was only one stumbling block.
“I wouldn’t have a problem representing the United States, but my job comes first,” said McGarrell. “If I’m getting the time off from my job, I’ll definitely represent the United States.”
The 38-year-old McGarrell was outstanding in his first year playing in United States Cricket Association tournaments.
He captained the Atlantic Region to a second-place finish at the recently concluded USACA Senior Nationals, which was won by the North West Region. He took six wickets for 44 runs in three matches.
McGarrell was also named the best bowler in the USACA Eastern Conference tournament played in Atlanta in September, after taking 7 for 60 in three matches.
Guyana-born United States captain Steve Massiah is also anxious to have McGarrell in the line-up for the competition.
He believes that if McGarrell becomes available, he would be the link that the American national team has been missing in ICC tournaments.
“It would be great to have a person like Neil in the team with the wealth of experience he has,” said Massiah.
“His skill level would definitely lift this team, and give us a much-needed boost, especially in the fielding department which at times can be complacent.
“Neil is someone who throughout his career has been an outstanding fielder, and I guess having him in our squad would do wonders.”
United States will face Italy, Oman, Denmark, Papua New Guinea, and hosts Hong Kong in the WCL Division 3 between January 22 and 29 next year.
