President of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association, Fred McWilfred has quit his post citing differences with executives of the body.
McWilfred could not be reached immediately for comment but Executive Director of the GGDMA Edward Shields told Stabroek News today that McWilfred made known his intentions to the body by way of letter several hours ago. He noted that this was done after a media house contacted the mining body for a comment in relation to the issue.
At the mining body’s bimonthly meeting a few weeks ago miners had expressed concern over McWilfred’s absence from the meeting. It was subsequently reported that the GGDMA could not locate him for some seven weeks.
A meeting is set for tomorrow afternoon where executives will review the issue.
McWilfred became President on June 10 after leading a vigorous campaign by small miners to oppose new stipulations on mining stemming from the government’s Low Carbon Development Strategy. Among these were the notice period before mining could commence.
