A labourer received the maximum sentence of six months in jail for inflicting grievous bodily harm on his wife when he appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Rohan Ramkissoon, 48, of No. 69 Village, Corentyne, Berbice pleaded guilty to the summary charge. Before his sentence was handed down, he begged for leniency from Magistrate Krishndat Persaud saying that he would apologise to his wife who was in court.
According to Police Prosecutor Sergeant Michael Grant, on Sunday, November 28, Ramkissoon’s wife, Shanta, was at home cooking when her husband went home under the influence of alcohol. When the woman asked Ramkissoon to fetch water for her to cook the man became annoyed and verbally abused her, the prosecutor said.
After the verbal abuse, Ramkissoon picked up a stick but his wife locked herself in the house, Grant continued. Ramkissoon gained entry to the house by breaking the glass window and dealt Shanta several lashes about her body causing an injury to her hand. The prosecutor pointed out to the Magistrate that the matter was reported by the doctor who later examined Ramkissoon’s wife. The doctor and the wife then went to the station and filed the report. After investigations, Ramkissoon was arrested and charged, the Prosecutor said.
