Dear Editor,
Sheema Mangar died as a result of being run over by the escape car used by the thief who snatched her phone on September 10.
Ms Mangar was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital then to St Joseph’s Mercy Hospital. The police recovered a part of her uniform left on the street when Ms Mangar was dragged by the getaway car. There are several questions which the police need to answer about how the investigation into Ms Mangar’s death is proceeding.
1. How is the investigation assisted by the police refusal to show the dead woman’s parents the garment recovered from the street? Could they not help the police to identify the garment?
2. Why were the clothes that Ms Mangar was dressed in when she was taken to the hospital not handed over to or collected by the police?
3. What does it mean that the police have requested more than one set of Ms Mangar’s work uniform, on the grounds that the first set requested and handed to the police by her parents was at another station?
4. What are the police really testing for on the scrap of fabric recovered from one of the vehicles detained following the fatal incident?
5. Have samples really been sent to the Caribbean for testing, and will these tests go the way of so many previous tests that we’ve heard about?
Surely the police can do a better job of reassuring grieving parents that some semblance of urgency and professionalism are being applied to the investigation of their daughter’s death?
Yours faithfully,
Karen de Souza
