Over 220 persons are expected to benefit from the $40 million investment at Paradise on the East Coast Demerara where 52 families were allocated house lots, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali said the allocation is an end to years of sacrifice that many families have made while renting properties or sharing residences with other family members.
He urged allottees to make full use of the facilities that are offered during the one-stop-shop to make the necessary connection with the banks, surveyors and engineers from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) so that they can expedite construction.
“We want you to make use of the opportunity, we want you to know that we are in partnership with you and we stand committed to offering after sale service and ensuring that you have a service that is second to none,” Ali stated. He also said that the ministry has been working aggressively towards fulfilling its target of distributing 5,500 house lots for 2010.
“We set a very high, very competitive, but realistic target for allocation of house lots. Our target this year is 5,500 and we are committed to this target,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ali said the housing ministry hopes to commence expansion works in Eccles on the East Bank Demerara by next April which would make available a further 1,500 house lots.
He said that plans are already underway for the expansion of Zeelugt to facilitate another 500 lots and also in other areas such are Bartica, Region Seven and Mahdia, Region Eight.
GINA reported that Shandel Wickham of Ann’s Grove who was allocated a lot said it was “a dream come through” for her since she waited a long time to have her own home. She said it will be a benefit not only for her but also her children.
And Ressia Moore, another allottee, also expressed gratitude to the government and the ministry for making it possible for her to have a house lot.
