Young Warriors defeated Whim National by 5 wickets to advance to the quarterfinals of the New Building Society Second Division Cricket Competition which continued recently in Berbice at Cumberland, Canje.
Led by Chandradat Gobin’s 54 not out, Whim National posted a sound 210 for 9 against Young Warriors.
With rain delaying the start of the Warriors’ response, their innings was reduced to 37 overs and their target was reset to 195 runs to win.
Young Warriors eventually began their chase and lost two early wickets to be 32 for 2, but opening batsman Khemraj Harris, who posted 66 steadied Young Warriors’ innings. With Harris dominating a 100 run partnership with Hubern Evans (31), Young Warriors surpassed Whim National with a score of 198 for 5 in 32 overs.
In the other play-off, Hopetown United also advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Fyrish by 2 runs.
Led by medium pacer Javed Mohamed and off spinner Shri Kissoon, who took 3 wickets, Fyrish did well to restrict Hopetown United to 128 all out.
When Fyrish responded they were soon 5 for 1 but Javed Mohamed’s 52 and Shri Kissoon (19) put on 75 for the second wicket and placed them in control.
However when Hopetown United introduced off spinners Steffon Adams and Kelwin Bennette, they quickly took two wickets each to reduce Fyrish from 80 for 1 to 99 for 5.
A seventh wicket stand of 17 valuable runs took Fyrish within sight of the target at 118 for 7, needing only 11 runs more, but yet another off spinner Kenje Sedoc cleaned up the last three wickets, dismissing Fyrish for 126 all out
