Six members of the recently established Guyana Shotokan Karate Club (GSKC) were upgraded on Friday last when the club held its first grading, under 8th Dan master Frank Woon-A-Tai at the Malteenoes Sport Club.
According to a press release from the club, Jordan Kong, Rasheed Khan-Guzman and Travis Heyliger successfully moved from 9 kyu (white belts) to
8 kyu (yellow belts); D’Andre Kirton moved from 8 kyu (yellow belt) to 7 kyu (orange belt) and Quaison Tasher and Tabita Goolsarran skipped from 9 kyu (white belts) to 7 kyu (orange belts).
Speaking with Stabroek Sport yesterday Goolsarran said that she is really happy about her achievement, while sensei of the club Mark Phang extended his congratulations to all the karatekas, and noted that they have been showing evident progress since they joined the club.
The GSKC is a member of the International Shotokan Karate Federation and is also affiliated to the Guyana Karate College. The club was formed in October and has its dojo at the Girl Guides Building in Brickdam, where training sessions are conducted from 5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
