The number one seeded team of Philip Squires and Godfrey Lowden defended their title when they defeated the team of Ezra Sue-Ho and Andy Gouveia 6-7 ( 8-6) 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 on Tuesday in the men’s doubles finals of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) Pegasus Open being held at the courts of the Pegasus Hotel.
According to a GLTA press release, the match was one of the most competitive and exciting tennis games locally in recent times, with a score that emphasized the rigorousness of the battle. As the two teams traded points, it was Squires and the usually unpredictable Gouveia who led their teams. Gouveia saved his best for the finals and put down some huge first and second serves which allowed Sue-
Ho to easily put away winners at the net. On the other side of the net, veteran Lowden succeeded in landing some unlikely winners while Squires was consisten
t as usual.
It was only in the third set when Sue-Ho had to serve at 5-5 and twice double faulted under the pressure that the potential for a third straight tie-breaker was avoided. Squires was able to easily serve out the set and give the defending champions the title.
Squires is expected to be back on the courts tonight when he takes on number two seed Jeremy Miller in the much anticipated men’s singles finals. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm.
Meanwhile, weather permitting the women’s final is expected to follow soon, with defending champion Carol Humphrey taking on junior player Krystal Sukra as the tournament winds down to a close.
