Twenty-five children, from two to 16 years old, recently participated in the Tina Insanally Foundation’s first workshop, an Introduction to Music for children, at Theatre Guild Playhouse, Barrack Street, Kingston.
Everyone had a great time at the half-day event which sought to expose them to the basics of music theory, a release from the Foundation said. The activities ranged from singing and dancing with the little ones, to music games and an introduction to choir and instruments for the older participants.
The workshop was designed and facilitated by Diana Burrowes and Vinode Ramsammy and Foundation volunteers.
Burrowes holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Certificate in Principles of Healthy Childhood Development from the University of Waterloo in Canada. She is an accomplished vocalist with significant professional and volunteer experience working with children. Ramsammy, the Foundation’s Programme Coordinator, is an experienced musician and performer, who has worked to establish music programmes for children in several institutions in the US.
Meanwhile, the next activity is a Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 19 at the Theatre Guild Playhouse.
Inspired by the life of Tina Insanally, the goal of the Foundation is to enrich the lives of Guyanese children through music, the release said.
Programmes have been established in the Red Cross Convalescent Home, St. Ann’s Orphanage and St. John Bosco Boys’ Home. Children participate in weekly sessions which range from music and movement to choir practice and instruction in instruments.
