Broad St bests Albouystown in Guinness Futsal final

The Broad Street Futsal team was crowned as the Guinness ‘Greatest of De Street’ champion after they defeated Albouystown in the final of the Futsal Competition on Saturday night at the National Park Tarmac.

The team carted off the top prize of $500 000 following a nail-biting encounter with Albouystown that ended 4 – 3 on penalty kicks after the teams were in a 1 – 1 deadlock at the end of extra time. Albouystown had to settle for the runner-up place again and the $300 000 cash prize.

In the third place showdown, West Front Road defeated Alexander Village 3 – 2 to claim the $150 000 prize leaving Alexander Village to settle for the $50 000 cash prize.

In the final, both teams contested the opening minutes at quite a hot pace before settling down and putting together passes and creating opportunities. Broad Street drew first blood in the tenth minute, compliments of Jimmy Gravesande.
When the second half resumed, Devon Small equalized for Albouystown in the 14th minute. For the remainder of the match and into extra time, a see-saw battle ensued but no one scored and the match moved to a penalty shootout.

Prior to the final, Alexander Village opened against West Front Road with an early fifth minute goal compliments of Quacy Bourne. They controlled the first half but did not manage to extend their lead. This was rectified in the second half, when Sheldon Gurrik scored in the 18th minute.

However, Michael Oie scored for West Front Road in the 20th minute then two minutes later; Ola Pedro equalized and made the game quite intense winding down to the final whistle.

In the final minute of play, West Front Road was awarded a penalty kick that was successfully converted by Wendell Pedro.
