A woman accused of dealing a man a sound licking was yesterday placed on $5,000 bail when she appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Joy Brummell, of 39 La Grange, West Bank Demerara, is that on April 26, at Georgetown, she assaulted Peter Harvey so as to cause him actual bodily harm. The mother of two pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful assault when it was read to her by the acting chief magistrate.
In giving the facts of the case, prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that Brummell, who at that time of the incident was living at Harvey’s house, accused the man of breaking into her bedroom and removing a number of items.
According to Telford, Harvey, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time, soon began to raise his voice at the woman, demanding that she remove clothing she had on the line.
This, Telford said, soon led to a heated argument between the two and it later escalated into a physical altercation.
The court heard that Brummell took off her slippers and began trashing Harvey. The woman, the court was told, then picked up a piece of wood and dealt the man a beating about his body.
Harvey was rushed to the hospital by neighbours and had to be admitted.
Brummell was later admitted to bail in the sum of $40,000.
After explaining to the magistrate that she could not afford the bail as she only had $5,000, the sum was lowered. The matter was transferred to Court Three for December 13, when statements are to be taken.
