A man accused of stealing a pair of vehicle fog lights was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on November 28, at Georgetown, Michael Persaud stole a pair of car fog lights valued $30,000. The lights were the property of Mark Garnett.
Persaud pleaded not guilty to a charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate.
In giving the facts of the case, prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that Garnett had parked his car on Light Street and went into his home. Upon his return, he saw the accused in a stooping position in front of his car. After raising an alarm, Telford said that Garnett vigorously pursued the accused on foot but the man made good his escape. The police were later summoned to the scene and conducted investigations, which eventually led to Persaud’s arrest.
The prosecution objected to the accused being granted bail, noting that the man has a pending matter of similar nature before Court Three. The prosecutor said too that having been sent on his own recognizance for the pending matter Persaud failed to return to court and a warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry remanded Persaud to prison and the case was transferred to Court Three for December 13.
