Chelsea eyeing women’s singles title in senior division

Already with eight junior titles under her belt, Caribbean junior cadet table tennis player Chelsea Edghill is eyeing the women’s singles among other titles when the senior division of the Vitamalt National Table Tennis Championships commences Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Edghill has let it be known that she had come into the tournament with the hopes of playing unbeaten throughout and so far she has been able to fulfill her aspirations.

“It feels good that I won the titles

in the junior category. I came in the tournament hoping to play unbeaten, and in the women’s singles I’m aspiring to do that.”

Edghill stated that she has her  eyes set on taking down women’s singles champion of the Independence Tourna-ment, Natalie Cummings.   At the Independence Tourna-ment Cummings had knocked Edghill out of the women’s singles in a semi-final matchup.

In addition, Cummings had put a stop to Edghill in the Commonwealth Games trials. Now Edghill is bent on vengeance at this weekend’s matches.     “For the women’s singles I’m aspiring to beat the champion of the women’s singles for the Independence Tourna-ment, Natalie Cummings. I had lost to her, and then I had lost to her 3 – 2 at the Commonwealth Games playoff, so this time I’m coming back more fiercely,” Edghill said.

“I have respect for her talent and everything but I hope I beat her and even if I don’t I must put up a good fight and if I use my head I will win.”

Edghill will get her chance to prove herself this weekend, where she is also expected to vie for the title against US-based player Trenace Lowe. However the three will miss out on a chance to test their strength against the defending champion Michelle John, who will not be at the competition owing to her academic  commitments.

Edghill is also expected to participate in the women’s doubles and the senior mixed doubles competitions.
