A Bartica man accused of a break-in and theft was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $40,000 when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Troy Mitchelle is that between December 4 and December 5 at Bartica, he broke and entered the mini-mall of Rajnarana Suknandan and stole therein a quantity of Nike slippers and cash, amounting to $7,500.
Mitchelle, 26, of 99 Second Street Bartica, pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when it was read to him by the magistrate.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that between the periods mentioned in the charge, Suknandan secured her business premises by means provided and left.
She subsequently received a call from a neighbour who related to her that the mini-mall appeared to have been broken into.
According to Telford, the police promptly responded to calls and arrived at the scene, where investigations were conducted. The lawmen, according to Telford, were later led to Mitchelle, who upon his arrest for the offense admitted guilt. Suknandan was not present at court.
The prosecution had no objection to the accused being granted bail but requested that it be set in a substantial sum that will ensure that Mitchelle returns to stand trial.
Mitchelle was later admitted to bail and the matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrates’ Court for January 5.
