Berbice cop remanded on ganja charge

Police Constable Antonio Balrup, charged with having seventeen grammes of cannabis sativa on December 3, last was refused bail following his appearance at the Reliance Court, East Canje yesterday. He denied the allegation.

Representing  Balrup, attorney at law  Mursalene  Bacchus, failed in securing bail.

Magistrate Omeyana Hamilton after listening to legal submissions,  promised an early  hearing and adjourned the case to December 29.

Earlier, Police Prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figueira informed the court that based on the

allegations, Balrup, is no longer a member of the Guyana Police Force.

However, Bacchus responding, questioned whether the Court was in receipt of any document supporting the prosecutor’s allegation. On receiving a negative response, the lawyer referred to his client as a serving member of the Force.
