A $121M double-door sluice at Golden Fleece on the Essequibo Coast was on Tuesday commissioned by Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud.
The Government Information Agency said the sluice was deigned to cater for 2.25 inches of rainfall in 24 hours. In addition to its $121M cost, the sluice also entailed a consultation fee of $17M.
Persaud said that for the first time in Guyana’s history the country has exported more than 300,000 tonnes of rice despite many challenges. A large part of this is via the Petrocaribe arrangement with Venezuela. Rice production, he said, has surpassed the second revised target for the year.
A motorbike was given to the regional coordinator by the ministry to effectively monitor works.
