It is down to fourteen hopefuls after two semi-finals in the inaugural Banks Groovy Soca competition, and while some of the big names have been eliminated Director Sean Bhola promises that tonight’s finals will be spicy and provide something to talk about for a very long time to come.
Bhola told The Scene that the competition has been very exciting, including the first semi-finals, while the second semi-finals were even better.
“There were some surprises during the competition; some of the popular names did not make it through to the finals. Some of the – I would like to call – dark horses, emerged into the finals which makes the competition even more interesting,” Bhola said.
Shockingly one of the all-time favourites and winner of last year’s Carib Soca competition Shelly G was one of those eliminated in the first round, along with the Mighty Rebel and Young Bill Rogers, both of whom were winners of the Mash calypso competition. According to Bhola their greatest enemy has been the weather, as they have had to postpone and change venues, but he said the crowd has been very supportive and he hopes the support would continue this evening with persons turning out in their numbers.
There are still some of the hot favourites in the running, such as Adrian Dutchin who says, ‘Ah taking it.’ There is also Jumo Primo with ‘On Meh,’ Vanilla with ‘This party can’t done,’ while Michelle ‘Big Red’ King wants to ‘Wuck it down on me.’
Delory Dash says ‘I’m Ready,’ Aron Dasraj is all about ‘Caribbbean Soca,’ while Ras Marcus is of the opinion that ‘Woman nice and sweet’ even as Orlando ‘Bonesman Johashen shouts ‘A come fuh de thing.’ Aubrey Bulter and Dennis Dummett team up to sing ‘In she eye’ while Cliton ‘Passion’ Adolphus sings about ‘My life.’ It is ‘One night’ for Wilbur ‘B52’ Levans, Roger ‘Roger Brains’ Hassel feels ‘You want me’ and Sweet Kendingo says ‘Hey is whe de party deh’. Dallas Forte comes with something different as he is belting out a gospel soca in the name of ‘Unspeakable joy.’
The winner will walk away with $750,000, the runner up will get $500,000, the singer who takes third place will receive $300,000 and the one who places fourth, $150,000.
