The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) yesterday concluded its Annual Regional Visits with meetings in Aishalton and Karasabai, Region Nine and heard residents of the former call for a clean election campaign next year.
The Community meetings which saw the participation of a total of approximately 115 persons were deemed successful, the ERC said today.
According to the ERC the aims of the meetings were to sensitize individuals on the need for tolerance and respect for all races and to discuss how they can contribute to racial harmony in their communities and ultimately Guyana.
“During the interactions with the 53 residents of Aishalton at the Community’s Multi-purpose Hall the residents urged the ERC to ensure that there is a clean Elections Campaigning for the upcoming 2011 National and Regional Elections. The team also met with 59 residents at the Karasabai Primary School (old building) where several issues were raised and recorded”, the ERC said.
Among the issues raised during the interaction were cases of discrimination in the awards of contracts for the community’s’ development, the lack of information (no access to daily newspapers etc.), mistreatment of Amerindians at medical institutions in the city when they try to access services and the non-employment of residents on projects in the community.
