Mixed fortunes for Ashley Khalil

Guyana’s two-time junior Caribbean squash champion, Ashley Khalil, on Saturday defeated Canadian Becky Kohlruss in her first round match in the Canadian Junior Open Squash Championships currently ongoing at Niagara on the Lake, Ontario.

However Khalil was cut down 7-11, 7-11, 3-11 by Canada’s number two junior ranked female Alix Younger in the round of 16.   According to the event’s website, Khalil, participating in the under-19 girls’ singles, defeated Kohlruss 11 – 2, 11 – 3, 11- 1 in the main draw before losing to Younger.

Khalil’s brother Jason-Ray Khalil, participating in the boys’ under 17 singles, was eliminated from the main draw by Alykhan Thobani.

However both players are making strides in the consolation division with Ashley Khalil defeating Brooke Shmon 11 – 0, 11 – 0, 11 – 3 to move on to the round of 16. She was scheduled to play Rachel Au last night while Jason-Ray defeated Caio Carvalho Magnani 11 – 4, 11 – 5, 12 – 10 in his first consolation match.

Competing against 256 other contestants in the category, Jason-Ray was next scheduled to come up against Dorian Lewis-Willie last night.

Meanwhile, Canadian-based Guyanese Jean-Claude Jeffrey, representing Canada, was also eliminated in the first round of the boys’ under 17 main division and consolation competitions. Jeffrey crumbled 4-11, 0-11, 4-11 to Jacques Theron in the main draw and was defeated 9-11, 6-11, 3-11 by Jarryd Osbourne in the consolation draw.
