An unemployed man of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam was remanded to prison on separate charges of robbery under arms and break and enter and larceny when he appeared at the New Amsterdam Court on Friday.
Meignauth Premraj, 29, of Angoy’s Avenue, who was not required to plead to the indictable offences, was remanded to prison by Magistrate Omeyana Hamilton until December 28.
Reports are that around 8:30 am on December 8, while armed with a cutlass and wearing a mask, he entered the home of Rajpattie Mohabir, 69, at Smythfield, New Amsterdam and robbed her of a gold bangle worth $20,000, a television set costing $20,000 and a music set valued $150,000 along with $10,000.
Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting told the court that Mohabir was in the lower flat “picking rice” when the defendant reportedly entered and ordered her upstairs.
He then ripped off the gold bangle she was wearing, stole the cash and brought her back downstairs. He then tied her up and escaped with the articles.
According to the prosecutor, the “barefaced” accused reportedly returned to the woman’s home, this time without the mask and demanded the remote control for the television.
The woman who later managed to untie herself then made a report to the police. Based on the description police went to the defendant’s home where he was caught red-handed with the television and other articles.
He reportedly confessed to the robbery and took police to a vacant house at Port Mourant where the music set was stashed.
On the same day he also reportedly broke into the home of Mohabir’s neighbour, Mervin George, 62, and carted away one Jwin tape recorder valued $10,000, three ornaments worth $6,000 and a kitchen set valued $3,000.
George returned home around 11 am and found the front door to the lower flat of his house broken and the article missing and made a report to the police.
Those articles were also recovered at Premraj’s home. Further, he was slapped with a charge of attempt murder. An arrest warrant had been issued for him for that charge.
