Guyana’s Under-17 footballers failed to record a win in their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) second round World Cup preliminary competition when they were beaten by Barbados 6-1 in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.
Guyana’s lone goal came off the boot of Domini Garnette in the 79th minute of play.
The Guyanese had earlier suffered defeats to host Dominican Republic 0-1 and Haiti 0-7 in the four-nation playoff played during last week.
Guyana conceded 14 goals in the three matches they played.
Barbados will advance to the next round to be played in Jamaica in February next year.
Guyana’s performance was a far cry from their first round showing when they came out winners of Group D in Dominica in July last following wins against Dominica 5-0 and Aruba 7-0 and a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands Antilles.
The touring party of 19 players and five officials was expected to return to Guyana last night.
Football officials were looking forward for a much better performance from the Under-17 footballers who had remained Guyana’s main hope to salvaging pride at the regional level following the disappointing run of the Golden Jaguars national footballers who exited at the preliminary stage of the Digicel Caribbean Cup final in Martinique recently.
