Marathon Man created a major upset in winning the feature B class event when the Port Mourant Turf Club staged its pre-Christmas horse race meet at the club’s track on Sunday at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
The horse, running out of the Jumbo Jet Stable, was skillfully guided by veteran jockey Rupert Ramnauth and secured the winning prize of $500,000, compliments of Banks DIH, and the Water Chris trophy. The win by Marathon Man also ended the reign of horses from the Crawford and Elcock stables in the feature 1300m event.
The early pace was set by Night Crescendo of the Crawford Stable with Yap ‘Old Boy’ Drepaul and Prince Charming of the Elcock stables.
However, Marathon Man made its move on the inside to edge a fast finishing Night Crescendo while Miss Orientate placed third and Prince Charming fourth.
Sabrina Princess, which was also ridden by Drepaul of the Kris Jagdeo stable, took care of business in the main supporting feature of the Guyana and West Indies bred animals to continue its winning streak. The event’s top prize was $400,000 and the Arch-way Snackette trophy over 1700m.
Night Crescendo started the day on a winning note in the D class 1000m Republic Bank sponsored 1000m sprint event to cart of the $300,000 and the Ganesh trophy. In second place was the newly-imported Gullium of the Jagdeo stable, with Laura Lee In Flight and Mamzelle rounding out the money.
The two-year-old event for Guyana and West Indies horses saw Better Than Gold continuing its uneaten run since its arrival in Guyana earlier this year with another easy win. Better Than Gold easily rode away with the $300,000 prize.
Big Impact made little impact to finish ahead of Irish Girl.
The competitive F class race saw Top of the Line of The Jumbo Jet stable taking away the $240,000 winnings and trophy compliments of Tony’s Auto Sale and Crown Spot Lemonade.
The 1300m race, which was dubbed one of the most competitive races of the day, ended with Fresh Prospect, Miracle Run and Sir Balajie coming in second, third and fourth respectively.
Super Cat took top honours in the second two-year old for Guyana bred horses over 1000m.
The win was worth $160,000 and the Bobby Variety Store trophy. Royal Salute, Princess Renuka and Nordan Junior were the others that placed.
Spread the News scored a convincing win over Dream Girl, Mona Lisa and Funny Sided.
The Digicel-sponsored race for the I-3 Maidens and J class horses, saw Savion winning ahead of Miracle Silver, Extra Heat and Bounty Flyer for the $120,000 top prize and Digicel trophy.
Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford’s stable took the champion stable award with two wins, one second placed finish and two third placed finishes ahead of both the Jagdeo and Jumbo Jet stables, who registered two wins apiece. The top performers received trophies, compliments of Ramesh Sunich of The Trophy Stall, Bourda Market.
The top horse on show was Night Crescendo of the Crawford stable with a first and second place.
