Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday remanded a man to prison after he was charged with the murder of Moruca resident Damien La Rose.
Alex Chattergoon, 20, of Paradise, Essequibo Coast was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court just before noon.
It is alleged that on October 29, Chattergoon murdered La Rose at Kumaka, Moruca, North West District.
The case has been transferred to the Acquero Magistrate’s Court (located in Moruca) for January 11, 2011.
Chattergoon has been charged following a lengthy delay of the investigation into the murder. Early last month the Director of Public Prosecutions had ordered that police conduct further investigations into La Rose’s case and it was following this that the accused was charged.
In a press release issued shortly after the man’s death, police had said that investigations revealed that La Rose, a pump attendant of Horridah, Moruca, and a group of friends were imbibing at a shop around 10 pm on the day in question when an argument arose. La Rose, they had reported, was fatally stabbed during the argument.
La Rose reportedly died on his way to the Kumaka Cottage Hospital.
