At the New Amsterdam Court yesterday, a carpenter was sentenced to a total five years imprisonment after he confessed to being in of possession of cocaine and a smoking utensil.
On December 15, around 2:30 pm, Suresh Ramdial, 44, of 214 Nigg Settlement, Corentyne had in his possession one gramme of cocaine sativa and a smoking utensil.
Magistrate Omeyana Hamilton, before whom he appeared, imposed a three year sentence for the narcotic possession, while a two-year custodial penalty was handed down for the smoking utensil. The sentences will run concurrently.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, told the court that the defendant’s wife returned home and found him smoking the illegal drug. As a result she made a report to Albion Station and ranks accompanied her home and found the narcotic and a smoking utensil concealed in a butter container.
Consequently, Ramdial was charged with having in his possession one gramme of cocaine, and being in possession a utensil used in connection for smoking cocaine, that is to say a glass bottle.
The prosecutor related that Ramdial was constantly stealing to upkeep his drug dependence habit and would also abuse his wife.
