A Grove, East Bank goldsmith was today robbed in the latest of a series of attacks by armed bandits.
Police this evening said that goldsmith Nandalall Narine of Grove, EBD, was in his workshop with two other workers at the time, when he was attacked and robbed by three men armed with firearms. The bandits took away a quantity of gold jewellery, $15,000 and a cell phone and escaped in a waiting car.
A release from Police HQ Eve Leary said that “quick response by the police led to the motor car being intercepted at Agricola, EBD, and the arrest of two suspects. The men are in police custody assisting with the investigations and the motor vehicle has been detained”.
Meanwhile, the police are also investigating an armed robbery that occurred at about 7.30 pm last night at Kingston, Corriverton, Berbice, during which businesswoman Mohanie Bidar was attacked and robbed by two men armed with a handgun and a knife.
Investigations revealed that Bidar along with her reputed husband, Fahia Mohamed, and her thirteen-year-old niece were at home when the men stormed in through the front door and held them up. The men then tied up Mohamed and ransacked the house and took away US$2,000, $30,000, 3 cell phones and a quantity of jewellery and got away. Four men have been arrested as the investigations continue.
And at about 10.30 last night Clevon Forde of Wismar Housing Scheme, Linden, was attacked and robbed of jewellery by two men, one of whom was armed with a gun, at Hadfield and Camp streets, Georgetown.
Police said he raised an alarm and public-spirited persons gave chase behind the men who were caught and handed over to the police. Investigations are continuing.
At about 3 pm yesterday, vendor Annette Dolphin was attacked and robbed of her jewellery by a man armed with a gun at the Stabroek Market area.
Police said that an alarm was raised and public-spirited persons gave chase after the perpetrator who fired rounds into the air as he fled. He then attempted to force a taxi-driver to aid him in his escape bid and after the driver refused, the robber joined a route 42 mini-bus.
The release said that the police, responding quickly to the report, managed to intercept the mini-bus along the East Bank of Demerara and arrest the suspect. A .38 snub-nose revolver with four rounds and two empty shells were found in his possession. He is in police custody and charges will be laid shortly.
