Guyana’s Jessica Stephenson copped a gold medal and set a new record in the girls’ 13 – 14 years-old 50m breaststroke event at the Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) Invitational Swim Meet on Saturday.
Guyana’s Olympian Niall Roberts also made it to the medal podium when he copped his second silver medal of the championships in the boys’ 15 years and over 100m butterfly event finishing with a personal best time of 1:01.14s.
According to reports, Stephenson finished in 34.81 seconds to better Trinidad’s national 13 – 14 age group record of 35.42s held by Cherelle Thompson. Stephenson is representing the host club Marlins Swim.
Guyana’s Athena Gaskin also ended with a personal best time in the 200m freestyle event of 2:25.17s for sixth position.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s Soroya Simmons shaved 10 seconds off of her seed time when she finished the 200m freestyle event in 2:32.31s for 12th place.
Simmons had placed fourth in the 200m backstroke event in 2:50.18s.
Roberts clocked 32.49 seconds in the 50m backstroke for sixth place while Guyana’s Noelle Smith touched the wall in a time of 40.77 seconds to achieve a seventh place position in the girls equivalent of the event.
Guyana’s youngest swimmer at the event, Hannibal Gaskin, participating in the boys’ 11 – 12 category placed 10th in the 50m breaststroke race with a personal best of 40.46 seconds.
He recorded another personal best time in the 100m butterfly event where he finished seventh overall in 1:16.94s.
The competition was due to end last night.
