The winner of Sunday’s New Building Society (NBS) limited overs cricket competition will be either Tamran Root or Young Warriors after the latter team completed a comfortable eight wicket win over Hopetown United in the second semi-final recently.
Played at the Cumberland ground in Canje, Young Warriors won the toss and decided to send in the opposing team.
The move worked as pacers Amir Rahaman and Kawal Mangal soon reduced Hopetown United to 32-4 after 12.2 overs with Rahaman picking up three wickets.
Hopetown’s K. Bennett and K. Joseph added a valuable 33 runs for the fifth wicket in 6.5 overs but both fell in quick succession as Hopetown United slipped to 70 – 6 after 24 overs. They team was eventually dismissed for 94 in 31.4 overs.
Bennett and Joseph, were the top-scorers with 24 and 11 runs respectively.
Rahaman grabbed 3-16 from eight overs while former Berbice and Guyana all-rounder Hubern Evans picked up 3 for 14 from 6.4 overs.
Left arm-spinner Anil Beharry chipped in with 2-13 from eight overs.
In reply, Young Warriors were off to a rollicking start with 13-year-old Berbice Under-15 batsman Shimron Hetmyer blasting his way to 40 runs with eight fours and one six from 23 balls.
Following Hetmyer’s dismissal Young Warriors labored in the next six overs with opener Khemraj Harris and former Berbice Under-19 wicket-keeper batsman Ishwar Singh at the crease.
After Harris fell for 10, former Berbice Under-15 all-rounder Linden Austin and Singh saw Young Warriors through to victory at 97 for 2. Singh was unbeaten on 25 and Austin not-out on 14.
Bowling for Hopetown United, Steffon Adams took 2-36 from seven overs.
