The year 2010 was a great year for the Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) which embarked on fundraising activities and which gave monetary donations to the Pakistan Flood Relief and to Haiti.
According to a press release from the association, the GFSCA donated $400,000 to Haiti, $375,000 to the Pakistan Flood Relief, $275,000 to Cancer Patient from Enmore and $250,000 to four West Indies female cricketers.
Additionally, the GFSCA was involved in fund-raising activities through softball matches at Crabwood Creek where they raised $497,000 and Mahaicony Creek where they raised $350,000.
The monies were raised through contributions from its 35 members along with support from many of the association’s followers.
“The association would like to thank its members and followers for their generosity and do hope that we continue this good work,” the GFSCA stated in the release.
“The GFSCA sent two teams to the United States of America to participate in the Florida Cup 2010 which took place from February 12-14. The Floodlight ‘A’ team reached the final, played at the Fort Lauderdale Cricket Stadium, but lost. “It is the only softball organization that ever sent teams to this World Premier Softball event.
The GFSCA also organized the General Marine nationwide softball tournament which was contested in three categories, Male Over-40, Male Open and Female Open and was successfully completed in less than three months. The competition started September 12 and finished at the GCC Ground Bourda on December 5.
The GFSCA also disclosed a number of competitions that are in the making for the coming year. These competitions begin January 23 with the ‘Stag Beer and El Dorado Rum nationwide softball competition. According to the release, this tournament will be played in three categories, Male Over-40, Male Open and Female Open and the competition will last for five months since the GFSCA will reserve four weeks for the staging of the GT&T 10/10 Softball Tournament. Two weeks for the beginning and two weeks for the ending of the GT&T tournament. All teams wishing to compete in the Stag Beer and El Dorado Rum tournament will be accepted and can call Wayne Jones at 650-1790. In February, the association will stage a fundraising match at Tuschen for the Community Centre. The Florida Cup tournament will be held from March 4-6 in the USA and the GFSCA will send two teams for the fourth consecutive year. In April, Floodlights ‘A’ & ‘B’ teams will play at Crabwood Creek to raise funds for the CWC Crematorium Site. In May, The Mike’s Pharmacy Inter County softball tournament will be staged in three categories – Male Over-40, Male Open and Female Open.
In June the Stag Beer and El Dorado Rum tournament will continue while in July, the GFSCA will host teams from South Florida, Orlando, New York, Connecticut, Maryland and Toronto to play against Guyana’s four best softball teams for the Guyana Cup.
In August, the Trophy Stall nationwide softball male and female tournaments will begin and it will end on December 4.
