The Guyana Volleyball Federation’s (GVF) first Volleyball tournament for 2011 will serve off on January 9 in Berbice, according to President of the GVF Lennox Shuffler.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport via telephone yesterday, Shuffler disclosed that the tournament was organized by the recently resuscitated Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA), under its newly appointed president, Gregory Rambarran.
Shuffler noted that after speaking to Rambarran yesterday via telephone, the two volleyball heads finalized the date for the tournament, but the competition is still in its planning stages.
Efforts to contact Rambarran for further details on the competition proved futile.
According to Shuffler in addition to the BVF, he has contacted other volleyball associations in relation to plans for the GVF’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where elections are due to be held.
“The AGM will probably be (held) during the third week in January… we want to start early in the New Year,” Shuffler said.
The upcoming tournament in Berbice is aimed at reviving the sport in the ancient county, which was practically volleyball-starved for the year 2010. Only two competitions were contested in the county, one leg of the Castrol Strikers organized, True Champions Volleyball Tournament and another tournament hosted by the Guysuco Training School in Port Mourant.
Nevertheless, Rambarran, who was recently elected to pilot the BVA, came in for praise from Shuffler as he acknowledged the revival of the BVA under Rambarran, who he expects to take volleyball in Berbice to its pinnacle.
“The Berbice association has been formed under Rambarran, who is good man and who will handle things very well,” Shuffler had stated in a recent interview with Stabroek Sport. Further details on the upcoming tournament and the GVF elections will be disclosed shortly.
