Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir today said that 2010 was a sad year as there were over 24 industrial deaths.
In a report today on his ministry’s activities, Nadir said that it was the highest number of deaths in recent times and a 400% increase over 2007.
“An analysis of the deaths shows that more than 50% are in the mining sector and another 17% in the forestry sector. Also more than half of those who died are between the ages of 15 and 35 years, especially in the Mining and Forestry sectors”.
Nadir said that too many “chances” are being taken with the lives of the workers.
There were 13 deaths in the mining sector and four in sawmilling. The cohort with the highest number of deaths was the 26-35 group. The 15 to 25 group came second with 6.
