Lancaster youth dies after Xmas accident

As a Lancaster teen was returning home from visiting his grandparents on Christmas morning he was fatally struck by a motor car which was reportedly speeding.

Carlos Lonsdale, 17, of Lot 25 Lancaster, Corentyne, Berbice died at the Port Mourant Hospital shortly after he was rushed there on Saturday morning following the accident.

Her son, Jillian Leitch told Stabroek News yesterday, was hit by a car while riding his bicycle along the Public Road at Manchester (two villages from Lancaster).

“I still don’t know what really happened to my son out there…I haven’t visited the scene. I don’t think I could handle something like that right now,” Leitch said.

Lonsdale, according to the grieving woman, left home shortly after 7am on Christmas day and told her that he was going to visit his grandparents. Reports reaching this newspaper have said that the car, HB 3961, was speeding when it collided with Lonsdale who had just ridden out of a street at Manchester.

Public-spirited citizens, this newspaper understands, rushed Lonsdale to the Port Mourant hospital. Leitch said that when she received news of what had happened to her son she immediately rushed to the medical institution.
“By the time I reach over there he had already died,” she said.

A post-mortem examination conducted yesterday, according to Leitch, determined that her son died from multiple injuries.
The last information she had gotten from police, Leitch reported, was that the driver of the vehicle which hit her son was in custody and would be charged shortly.
