After reports of “nuggets of gold” being found around the remote Region Nine community of Para Bara sent residents from surrounding communities scampering to the area, the frenzy has died down, according to a resident from the area.
One man, who went to the area, told this newspaper that some miners had indeed found a few nuggets some time back but it was only recently that they returned from the area and sold it, thus sparking the reports. Although persons had gone to the area since, there has been no other major find, the resident said. The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) had sent a team to investigate the reports but officials could not be reached yesterday on the findings. An official at Lethem had said earlier this month that several persons had gone to the office there to inquire about the reported finds.
The Amerindian community of Para Bara is one of the more remote communities in Guyana and is located along the biodiversity-rich Kuyuwini River. It is close to the Marudi Mountains where mining is currently ongoing. Another area in the Deep South Rupununi where mining is currently ongoing is Wakadanawa.
