Trevone Nedd, 19, was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $100,000, after being charged with stealing a woman’s cellular phone at Stabroek Market.
Nedd, of 84 Victoria Road, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he denied the charge of larceny from the person.
It is alleged that on December 28, at Georgetown, Nedd stole a cell phone valued $260,000 from the person of Lorraine Liverpool.
In giving the facts of the case, Prosecutor Stephen Telford said Liverpool was walking in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market when Nedd accosted her from behind, snatched the phone and then made good his escape. According to Telford, an alarm was later raised and Nedd was captured and arrested.
Attorney George Thomas, who represented Nedd, told the court that his client was innocent of the charge. He said Nedd was standing in the Stabroek Market area with his brother when he was approached by a police officer, who told him that he was needed at the station for a robbery. Thomas described the charge as baseless and trumped-up and he made an application for reasonable bail. Telford had no objection to Nedd being granted bail but requested that it be in a substantial sum to ensure that he return to court for trial.
The magistrate subsequently placed Nedd on bail in the sum of $100,000 and the case was transferred to Court Three for January, 3.
