PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo believes the regional side’s best chance of winning a World Cup will be at the Asian showpiece starting next February.
The Windies won the first two events staged in England in 1975 and 1979 and were the losing finalists in the 1983 event, but have not made a serious impact in the tournament since.
Bravo said, however, he was confident the unfavoured Caribbean side could pull off an upset in February 19 to April 2 tournament slated for India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
“I have a gut feeling that we can win this World Cup coming up in Asia. We will be playing a lot of matches in India and the conditions there will suit us well,” the 27-year-old said.
“We have shown that we have a very good record in India and we are backing ourselves to go out there and continue in this way and win this World Cup.”
West Indies, ranked eighth in the ICC One-Day Internationals, are not one of the favoured sides for the tournament, with India, South Africa and Sri Lanka all tipped as heavy favourites.
The Caribbean side will face a tough campaign in Group B as they have been pitted against India, South Africa and England, along with the Netherlands, Ireland and Bangladesh.
Bravo said despite the big names, the Windies possessed the potential to defeat any opposition on the day.
“We have some quality players in the ranks and once they have a good day, they can beat anybody in the world,” the Trinidadian said.
“We have shown that we are good, there is no dispute there, it is just for the guys to go out there and play positive and consistent cricket.”
While Bravo will be playing in only his second World Cup, he said there were other members of the team who would be playing their last and this would be added motivation for the side.
“There are a number of senior players on the team that will be taking part in their final World Cup and they would want to produce something special for the fans,” he said, while not naming the players.
Bravo is expected to head to Australia this week to play in the Big Bash Twenty20 tournament which starts December 30.
