Alpha United’s goalkeeper Ronson Williams put forth the best display of goalkeeping witnessed thus far in this year’s Kashif and Shanghai tournament to propel his team into the final last night at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
Williams made three crucial, consecutive saves for Alpha United which caused them to defeat eight-time finalists Topp XX 3 -1 on penalty kicks after the two teams had battled to a 1 – 1 draw at the end of regulation and extra time.
In the penalty shootout, Alpha United started off on a bad note by missing their first penalty but recovered to score the next three.
On the other hand, five-time champions Topp XX, scored their first shot but was denied on the next three attempts when Williams made all the right decisions in goal.
Earlier, Alpha United took the lead in the first half and led by that margin until the final minute of play when Topp XX was awarded a penalty.
Travis Waterton’s solid right-footed shot to the right was enough to level the game once again before the regulation time whistle was sounded.
The match up continued into extra time where both teams struggled to gain the lead.
Alpha United will play the winner of the Pele/Camptown showdown which was played late last night.
