The new year began tragically for a Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD) family following the death of a 30-year-old mason who was struck down while cycling along the roadway close to his home yesterday.
Police stated in a release that they are investigating the death of 30-year-old Mark Seebarran of Lusignan West, ECD, who was struck down on the Lusignan Public Road around 3 am yesterday.
According to the police, investigations have revealed that the driver of motor car HB 7825 was proceeding along the roadway when it is alleged that Seebarran, a pedal cyclist, who was towing Melissa Robinson, age 22, rode out from an access road onto the main road and was struck down by the motor vehicle.
They both sustained injuries and were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where Seebarran was pronounced dead on arrival. Robinson was also admitted a patient.
Robinson was subsequently discharged from the public hospital yesterday morning and the grieving woman told this newspaper that she and her common-law husband of six years were returning home from a nearby shop when the incident occurred.
The grieving woman, who sustained injuries to the right instep as well as a badly bruised left side, recounted that she and her husband cycled to a shop in the area sometime after midnight in order to purchase a few beverages.
She said that he had insisted that they purchase the items to begin the new year. The woman stated that they left the shop sometime around 2:30 am and headed south along the ECD public road.
She stated that as her husband was about to turn left into an access road leading to their home, she felt a sharp impact from behind, following which she was flung into the air. She said she could not recall what occurred after but noted that she regained her senses while being taken to the hospital in the tray of a police vehicle.
Robinson noted that her back as well as her legs were paining at the time and she was subsequently told the grim news of her husband’s passing.
Persons at the scene noted that Seebarran appeared to have died on the spot and according to a relative, the man sustained severe injuries to the head as well as his legs. He said Robinson was picked up in a small drain at the side of the road, some 20m away from the point of impact.
At the Robinson’s home at the village of Good Hope, relatives and friends converged as news of the man’s passing spread and according to relatives, the man spent most of Saturday with his six-year-old daughter, who they noted, he cared for dearly. Other relatives described the man as a caring individual who was always willing to assist others.
Robinson’s father stated that the family only recently began to “see things better” adding that the man’s passing was an incomprehensible setback to the family.
Seebarran’s remains are expected to be buried later this week and according to the police, the driver of the motor car is in custody assisting with investigations.
