A man accused of robbing another was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $65,000 when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on December 30, at Georgetown, Sean Persaud robbed Kevin La Fleur of a wallet and a quantity of cash, amounting to $63,350 in total. Persaud admitted to the charge of robbery when it was read to him but the magistrate entered a not-guilty plea for him after he offered an explanation.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that La Fleur was walking along the road when he was stopped by the accused and another person. Persaud, Telford said, asked “if he wanted to do business.”
According to Telford, the complainant responded in the negative and it was at this point that the accused held onto his neck while his co-conspirator placed his hands in La Fleur’s pocket and relieved him of the articles mentioned in the charge.
The prosecutor related that Persaud was later arrested and charged. He added that the items were not recovered.
When given a chance to respond, Persaud told the magistrate that it was Le Fleur who approached him on the night of the incident. Persaud said he was innocent of the charge levelled against him, pointing out that according to the facts presented by the prosecution it was another person who had robbed La Fleur.
La Fleur was not present in court.
After being placed on bail, Persaud was ordered to return to court on January 20.
