Avinash Persaud once again proved to be a player in a class by himself locally but his younger sibling Avinda Kishore is fast catching up as golf made positive strides in 2010.
Persaud retained the Guyana Open title by four strokes, his third win in four years, while Christine Sukhram was once again crowned ladies champion in the prestigious tournament sponsored by local beverage giant Banks DIH.
The premier event on the local golfing calendar saw over 70 golfers from the United States, Canada, Suriname and host Guyana competing but rain affected the two-day competition.
Young Kishore while failing to end in the top five in the Guyana Open, was impressive in the Suriname Open held in the neighbouring republic in September and showed consistency in local tournaments. The Lusignan Golf Club continued to attract sponsorship for its weekly tournament but failed to draw a great number of new members.
A new executive was installed in May but the incumbent president Lester Alvis was forced to resign after his tour ofduty in Guyana ended.
A few major sponsors offered to assist in a junior development programme which is likely to come on stream in 2011.
There were consistent performances from several players during the year in club tournaments among them William Walker, Bhowlaram Deo, Mohanlall Dinanauth, Muntaz Haniff and Carlos Adams, Roy Cummings, Dr. Ram Singh, Chatterpaul Deo, Patrick Prashad, Fazil Haniff, Rita Heikens, Deoram Dinanauth, David Harry, Francois Montour, and Mike Gayadin.
