Just over a week after he went missing, the body of Herman Emanuel Daniels was discovered floating in the Berbice River yesterday.
Daniels, 60, of Lot 103 Moore Street, Sheet Anchor, went missing on December 27, after he reported for duty on a tug where he worked as a watchman and a sailor.
Police said they received a call about 11:15 hrs about a decomposing body that was found floating in the basin at the mouth of the Berbice River, in the vicinity of the Oldendorff barge. With the help of personnel from the Oldendorff Shipping Company, the body was retrieved. Fazeena Daniels said her husband left to go to work around 06:00 hrs last Monday, which was the last time she saw him alive. They had a misunderstanding then he left to go to work, she said. When he did not return, she along with his employer David Armogan filed a missing person’s report at the Central Police Station.
Fazeena, who said her husband has been working with the company for the last 14 years, was taken by police to the New Amsterdam stelling wharf, where the body was taken after it was found. Upon seeing the body, the woman collapsed.
Armogan stated that Daniels was a good worker. He said that he had reported for duty last Monday, after not working during the Christmas weekend. The man stated that during the morning of the next day, his workmen noticed the door of the tug opened but Daniels could not be located. According to Armogan, extensive searches were done by his company and relatives after they learned that Daniels was missing.
Meanwhile, Harricharran Kowladat, 53, called ‘Bholanauth,’ was found dead yesterday in a dilapidated house, at Main Street, Cumberland, East Canje.
Kowladat, described as an alcoholic, was last seen alive on Sunday. After neighbours did not see him, they decided to check on him and found his body in the house. Police were subsequently called.
