Two men allegedly found with shotguns and ammunition at North West District mining camps were yesterday remanded to prison.
James Peters and Albert Prince were separately charged when they appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court
It was alleged that on December 31, 2010, at Big Hope, Waini, North West District, Peters had in his possession a 16-gauge shotgun and two matching cartridges while not being the holder of the required licences. The man denied both charges when they were read to him.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that police on a mobile patrol conducted a search on a camp belonging to Dalip Singh when Peters walked in with the gun in his hand.
The court heard from Telford that a safety precaution was carried out by the lawmen, who then recovered the ammunition. When asked to produce his licence for the firearm and ammunition, Peters could not do so.
Meanwhile, it was alleged that on December 13, 2010 at Big Hope Waini North West District, Prince also had in his possession a 16-gauge shotgun and a matching cartridge without licences.
Telford said Prince was also found during a search of a mining camp, where the items were found under a mattress on which he was lying.
Telford told the court that after the items were found, the police conducted further investigations which led to Prince’s arrest.
Both Peters and Prince were denied bail and their cases were transferred to the Akwero Court for April 5.
