Attention to India’s spinners when their series bowls off here next week.
The Caribbean side arrived here earlier this week to play five One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals from January 10-24.
“As our coach (Sherwin Campbell) said, teams coming here need to handle spin bowling so a major part of our preparation was devoted to playing spinners,” Powers was quoted as saying.
West Indies left the Caribbean on Saturday for the series against one of the strongest teams in the world, whose attack will be concentrated on slow bowling to accommodate the turning pitches here.
However, the Windies boast the world class teenaged batsman Stafanie Taylor who scored prolifically during the ICC Women’s Challenge in South Africa last October, and her teenaged counterpart Deandra Dottin who was also among the runs.
Taylor is currently ranked fourth in the ICC Batting rankings while Dottin is 15th, and with this duo at the centre of the side’s batting, Power believes West Indies has a balanced enough unit to challenge the Indians.
“In case our bowlers fall short, we have the batsmen to cover up,” she said.
India have named a strong side for the tour which includes the world number one ranked batsman Mithali Raj.
West Indies will play a one-day warm-up match against an Indian Board President’s XI on Saturday before kicking off their tour with the first ODI next Monday.
