Baksh urges more private schools to seek ministry approval

Education Minister Shaik Baksh has urged private education providers in Guyana to get the requisite approval from the ministry.

He made the call on Tuesday at the commissioning ceremony for a new wing at the Meten-Meer-Zorg Islamic Academy, where he lauded the investment and said his ministry is fully supportive of the development of private schools here.

“There are 86 pre-primary, primary and secondary private education providers in Guyana but only 15 have been approved by the Ministry of Education,” the Education Ministry noted in a release. It quoted Baksh as saying that the remainder will not be closed down but they will be given time to put their houses in order. The new education legislation, he added, will set-out the terms and conditions governing private education providers from the pre-primary to secondary levels.

Meanwhile, Baksh urged teachers at private schools to seek formal training at the Cyril Potter College of Education. He said too that all education management workshops and training seminars conducted by the Ministry will be opened to them. The Continuous Professional Development programmes offered by the National Centre for Educational Resource Development will also be available to private school teachers free of cost, the release said.
