Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday handed down a nine month jail sentence to a man who admitted that he stole shoes and other items, which he later resold.
Appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, contractor Ron Burnette admitted that on January 1, at the Bartica Stelling, he stole items worth $185,000. Among the stolen articles were two pairs of sneakers, a pair of high heel shoes and a t-shirt.
Burnette, 32, of Sophia, pleaded guilty. “Was New Year’s day and I was drunk and I see a bag at the stelling and I pick it up,” he told the court. “I take out the shoes and the boots…two girls come up to me and say they want buy them,” he added.
When asked whether he sold the items, Burnette said he did.
According to him, the next day he was accosted by a man who told him that the bag he found belonged to a woman and persons in the vicinity began shouting that he stole the woman’s bag. Burnette was subsequently arrested and charged.
