A man accused of stealing a quantity of ladies shoes was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $75,000, after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation against Junior Johnson is that between January 2 and January 3, at the Stabroek Market area,he stole 40 pairs of ladies shoes, valued $100,000.
The items are the property of Shaundell Chand and they were stolen from her Stabroek Market stall.
Johnson, a labourer, of 606 East Ruimveldt, denied the charge of simple larceny.
Meanwhile, Philbert Pillew, who also appeared before the acting Chief Magistrate, was accused of unlawfully and maliciously assaulting Johnson on January 3.
Pillew, a vendor of 317 Front Road, West Ruimveldt, pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful assault when it was read to him by the magistrate. In giving the facts of the case, prosecutor Stephen Telford said Chand received information that someone had broken into her stall and stolen shoes. After rushing to the stall, Telford said that Chand found Johnson removing a quantity of shoes.
It was at this point, the prosecutor said, that Pillew, a colleague of Chand, interviewed and assaulted Johnson.
After hearing the case, Johnson was granted bail and Pillew was sent on his own recognisance. Both men were ordered to return to court on January 18.
