Berbice businessman Hareshnarine Sugrim, who allegedly fled the scene after he fatally struck a Line Path motorcyclist, is being sought by police in relation to causing death by dangerous driving.
A wanted bulletin was issued yesterday afternoon for 60-year-old Sugrim, called ‘Chiney’, whose last known address is Lot 5, Section B, Grant 1804 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice. Sugrim, the bulletin said, “is wanted by the police for questioning in relation to Causing Death by Dangerous Driving following an accident which occurred at No. 78 Village, Corentyne on January 02”.
The accident, according to police, resulted in the death of Rajkumar `Roy’ Basdeo, 47, of Line Path, Skeldon, Corentyne.
Reports were that on Sunday at around 7.35pm Basdeo left his Lot 25 Line Path, Skeldon home riding motorcycle CD 7055. He was heading north on the western side of the Number 78 Village public road when motor van GMM 1564 which was allegedly speeding in the opposite direction attempted to overtake another vehicle but collided with him.
Eyewitnesses had said the driver on realising the severity of Basdeo’s injuries abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene. Heerawattee “Dolly” Ramrattan, the dead man’s wife, told Stabroek News last evening that neither that she nor other relatives had any idea who had hit Basdeo.
“We have been saying repeatedly that we don’t know anything about what happened out there…No, we were never informed by police that they were hunting for him [Sugrim] or that they were issuing a wanted bulletin for him,” Ramrattan said.
